This course is designed for students with no experience or limited experience with video cameras. It focuses on the basics of camera angle, continuity, cutting, close-up and composition. Students shoot video elements and edit the shots into clear visual communication projects with extensive instructor oversight.

Video Production I

Be introduced to video practices and theories. Through lecture and hands-on labs, students learn how to operate a video camera to acquire well-lighted subjects with proper picture composition. Audio gathering and manipulation are covered also. Shooting and editing for continuity are covered at length. The unique language of the video arts is learned as the student progresses through the semester.

Video Production II

Continue to grow an understanding of the techniques and the art of television by doing. This course builds on the basics learned in VID 105 and challenges the student in more complex projects. Through lecture and lab settings, students learn an elevated level of thinking in the numerous positions in the video career path. Students engage in creative expression and critical thinking. An introduction to non-linear editing provides the student with additional ways to communicate visually.

Audio for Video

This course is concerned with evaluating a variety of environments where video productions are recorded for postproduction or live event production. Students learn numerous microphones and the suitability of a microphone in a particular venue. Strategic placement of the microphones and controlling the audio sources throughout the production is also taught. Students also learn basic acoustic principles as they relate to on location audio or studio applications. Safety of spectators and crew members in the production area is covered as well.

Through lecture and hands-on experience students learn the principles of pre-planning and production in the studio and its various support areas. Students work the diverse jobs such as lighting, set design, technical directing, audio operation and master control required to accomplish a successful studio production. Each project is shot multi-camera, live on tape, in the studio. Teamwork is essential in the hectic environment of the television studio.

Learn the fundamentals of photojournalism in this course while developing content for weekly broadcasts. Students expand their ability to communicate messages through sharpened storytelling skills. Advanced shooting, lighting, editing, interview techniques and meeting deadlines are essential components of this course.

This course provides an overview of current software programs used to create motion graphics for video productions. Composition, color space and design are examined in-depth as this project-based course guides the student to creative awareness of graphic presentation.

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of Electronic Field Production and lighting using various types of studio lights and field kits. From interview lighting to product shots, students will learn to manipulate and finesse soft and hard light, to create a soft atmosphere or dramatic mood and bring about a third dimension using shadows. Assigned projects will test the student’s ability to compose shots, creatively light and shoot the scene. Students will work closely with internal and external clients to create a portfolio of their work.

Advanced Digital Video Editing & Composition

This fast paced course expands on skills learned in VID 205. Students learn organization through file management and software integration in a non-linear editing environment. The essentials of proper video and audio measurement for multi-platform distribution are the core of this course. Students work closely with internal and external clients to create a portfolio of their work.

Digital Photography I

Digital Photography is a basic course that covers camera operation, lenses, flash, studio lighting and composition. Students use Adobe Photoshop to manipulate and enhance images for final output. This course also covers the history of photography and briefly covers traditional black and white film photography. Final projects consist of the student’s portfolio throughout the semester.

The skills learned in VID 224 are the foundation for this challenging course. Students work in the numerous positions of the technical crew. Individual initiative while working in a team setting is necessary for success in this course. Several remote productions are executed throughout the semester. Systems integration through hardware and software enable the student to create broadcast quality productions. Pulling resources from other areas and courses of the school and the community further enhance this course. Strong interpersonal communications skills are expected.

Digital Photography II

Digital Photography II is an intermediate level photography class. Its purpose is the further exploration of your camera and the skills needed to successfully take photos in a variety of work situations and environments. The class goal will be to simulate as many “real world” photo situations as possible in order to give you the experience needed to perform your craft in a variety of normal situations no matter what is required of you professionally.

This is a “real world” workplace opportunity for upper class students in the Bachelor degree video production program. The student works full-time for one semester at Maine Public Broadcasting Network’s Channel 12 in Bangor, Maine. Supervised by company managers and school instructors, the student receives practical experience in such areas as linear and non-linear video editing, graphic design, set-up and execution of live TV production, and production of digital media content for on-air broadcast.

This course is designed to present advanced video students with all of the technical and creative skills to produce professional quality DVDs. Students work individually to create a digital portfolio. Each student learns to incorporate music, motion graphics, menus, transitions, slide shows and chapters onto a DVD project. The final DVD project will not only be functional but artistic as well.

Video Workshop

Students carry the load of responsibility in this course from the creation of the project idea to the edited project. Project ideas are submitted based on creativity, originality, and practicality. Planning, writing, production and post-production skills are applied as this major television project goes through its completion.
