LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Student and Parents;
We have studied and debated whether the New England School of Communications should require students to come equipped with laptop computers. Almost all of our students wind up bringing a computer to college. We are convinced that laptop computers significantly improve academic performance, offer the opportunity to accomplish homework outside of our laboratories, and the price of computers is dropping. Before the recession, we would have required computers for entering freshman this fall. We thought that it was an economic burden that families and students did not need to carry at this point, and therefore have held off on this decision.
With graduation from high school, it is often a time for celebration with a gift. Some times this gift is a computer. If we could weigh in for a moment on your considerations regarding computers, it may help direct you to a purchase that would be best used by a NESCom student. Because most of our students have some involvement with audio, video or the web, we recommend and use almost exclusively Apple Computers. Both in terms of software and hardware, we believe that for our students the Apple laptops represent the best value. Finally, with this equipment, your student will be a step ahead of what will likely be a requirement in the future.
This week Apple made an announcement at its annual show about price reductions along with enhanced performance of their computers. We recommend that you look closely at these models as they would appear to be the most appropriate for your student. We do recognize that the price of Apple computers is higher than that of PC’s, but our students will tell you when they return as sophomores, that they were pleased with the decision to purchase an Apple.
To help your money go further, NESCom has partnered with Apple to provide all NESCom® students Apple bundles at affordable prices. To start shopping, visit the store log in athttps://login.nescom.edu/ and although this sounds like a commercial for Apple, it is not and we do not financially benefit from Applesales.
Should you have technical questions, please contact Matthew Bryant, who is one of our computer specialists. Other questions regarding the general direction of our laptop initiative feel free to contact me or our Registrar, Anne Reed, toll free at 888-877-1876.
We are pleased that you will be joining the NESCom family.
Sincerely,
Thomas C. Johnston
President
