NESCom Federal Work-Study
About the Program
FWS gives students the opportunity to earn money by working part-time during the school year and possibly during the summer months and school breaks. It is an excellent way to earn money while gaining valuable work experience.
How do I participate in Federal Work-Study?
- Return your Financial Aid Accepance Form. If FWS was listed on your award letter, return your Financial Aid Acceptance Form indicating that you would like to accpet FWS.
- Complete an application. If you accept FWS on your Financial Aid Acceptance Form you will be put on the roster to receive information about jobs on campus through your NESCom student email address. If a position interests you, complete the application that is attached to the email and return it to the NESCom Office. We will submit the applications to the department with the open position for them to review. They may request a resume or ask you to meet for an interview.
- Wait for a callback. After each department has reviewed the submitted applications they will contact qualified applicants. Positions are filled based on merit and specific qualifications. A position can not be guaranteed EVEN IF FWS WAS LISTED ON YOUR AWARD LETTER.
- Complete final paperwork. You will need two forms of ID to complete required employment paperwork. You will have to keep a timesheet that has to be signed for by your supervisor. If you are selected by the department to be hired NESCom will perform a background check on you. This is noted on the application.
What if Federal Work-Study wasn't listed on my award letter?
To be eligible for the FWS program you must complete the FAFSA and have demonstrated financial need. Priority will be given to full-time students. FWS is awarded based on a first come, first serve basis for those who qualify. If you meet eligibility requirements, but were not awarded FWS on your award letter, you can contact the Financial Aid Office to be placed on the waiting list for a position in the event that positions are not filled by those initially awarded.
Salary and Earnings
If you accept FWS as part of your aid package, please remember that this is the amount you can work up to (on your award letter). The money you earn should not be included as student income when you apply for financial aid for the next year. Earnings from the FWS Program are subject to all applicable federal, state and local taxes.
Unlike grants and loans, your FWS eligibility does not defer payments of tuition and fees and other university charges. Instead, you receive bi-weekly paychecks as you work. A great idea would be to save your earnings made during the fall term toward tuition and fee expenses for the spring term. You only can work a maximum of 30 hours per week during the academic year.
The salary for FWS employment starts at $7.75 per hour and can be as much as $9 per hour for more experienced positions (like tutoring).
What’s expected of you?
- This is just like a regular job. You can be fired. We expect that you will show up on time, prepared to work. We are depending on you to do a job for us so we need to be able to rely on you.
- You may be representing NESCom in a professional setting so make sure you look your best. Some positions require that you wear professional attire (no jeans).
- Some positions are off campus and will require you to have your own transportation. Do not apply for these if you don’t have reliable transportation.
- You will most likely be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement. You may have access to students’ personal information that you cannot share. A violation of the confidentiality agreement will result in immediate termination of employment.
