The Student Loan Revolution: Parents
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR ME?
Since Federal Parent PLUS Loans are credit based, Parents that used this program as a resource had to complete a new Master Promissory Note each year. That will not change. The only difference is that instead of choosing a lender each year, all Parent PLUS Loans will be originated through the Direct Lending Program.
WHAT HAPPENS TO PLUS LOANS I BORROWED FROM PREVIOUS LENDERS?
In short, nothing. All of the terms, benefits, interest rates, and repayment time-tables you had under your old lender should remain the same. When your loans enters repayment you will still pay the lender you borrowed the loan from and you should not notice anything different.
You will only notice a change if your loan is sold. Previous lenders do have the option to sell your PLUS loan to the Department of Education. If that happens, you will notice some changes. Each lender will have their own methods of notifying you of the sale of your loan and what will happen next. At this time, we recommend contacting your lender to see what their plans are for your previous PLUS loans.
