Husson Announces Building Project

The Husson University Board of Trustees has approved major new campus construction to begin in April 2011.  The University will add a five-story multi-purpose building to include experiential learning spaces, classrooms, faculty offices and suite-style living space for 240 students.  The five-story $11 plus million project is scheduled for completion in August of 2012.

The University is also announcing a major renovation and expansion of the Dickerman  Dining Commons.  This $3 plus million dollar project is scheduled for completion in August of 2011.

“As our enrollment continues to increase, this is the natural next step in our growth,” said Richard Trott, Husson Alumnus and Chairman of the Board of Trustees.  “This multi-purpose building will help not only with our housing shortage, but will fully enhance our campus life.”

The building will showcase experiential learning classrooms dedicated to specific academic programs.  The College of Business would have a space for use by their students that would allow them to conduct simulated board meetings and web-based team analysis.  Students in our School of Legal studies will now be able to investigate mock crime scene scenarios which will be integrated across academic programs.

“With this combination of residential life, faculty offices and experiential learning centers in the same building, there will be wonderful opportunities for collaborative, hands-on learning, which are hallmarks of a Husson education,” said Husson President Robert Clark.  “Having the living space and the classrooms in the same building cultivates an environment conducive to the pursuit of academic and personal success.  Long term it will provide space for visiting faculty and lecturers to provide students the opportunity for more an even more holistic learning environment.”

The University’s Dickerman Dining Commons has increased their production from 200,000 to 300,000 meals per year.  This 10,000 square foot expansion will include a completely new kitchen and service area and a total renovation of the dining area including food stations, new seating and incorporating a tray-less flexible service style.

“We are excited to be able to expand on our ability to provide state of the art experiential learning centers to further enhance  program development in areas such as  in business and criminal justice,” said Dr. Lynne Coy-Ogan, Husson Provost.  “Just as students in our School of Nursing have access to cutting-edge simulated lab facilities, these spaces will allow our faculty in other disciplines to have their own dedicated experiential learning environments.”

Over the past 15 years Husson’s Bangor campus has grown exponentially to accommodate significant growth in enrollment from 1,000 students in 1996, to now more than 3,000 students.  New buildings on the Bangor campus include the Center for Family Business in 1997, the New England School of Communications Building in 1998, the Robert O’Donnell Commons in 2004, Furman Student Center, Willey Café and Cressey Marketplace in 2007, and the Beardsley Meeting House and Gracie Theatre in 2009.  Also during that time the University has added new athletic fields including the 3,000 seat Winkin Athletic Complex, home to baseball, football and field hockey, the Boucher Complex, home to Soccer and Lacrosse, the O’Keefe Softball Complex, and the Clara Swan Fitness Center.

The Architect is Winton Scott Architects of Portland and the contractor will be Allied Cook of Scarborough.  The University is also working with Fore Solutions to provide the energy and environmental systems for this Silver Certified LEED design build project.
