Husson Athletics Expands to Include NESCom Students

Husson University and the New England School of Communications (NESCom) are pleased to announce that NESCom students will be able to compete in Husson’s intercollegiate athletic department beginning in the fall of 2011.  The NCAA Division III Administrative Committee formally approved Husson’s request to establish an NCAA athletics consortium membership arrangement with NESCom in May.  With the NCAA approval, NESCom students will now be able to participate on any of Husson’s 15 NCAA varsity sport programs.

“We are pleased that the NCAA has approved our petition to develop a consortium that will allow our NESCom students an opportunity to participate on Husson’s Division III athletic teams,” stated President Bob Clark.  “With access to participating on our strong athletic teams NESCom students will have increased opportunities to develop their leadership and teamwork skills. I commend our Athletic Department, particularly Athletic Director Bob Reasso, with recognizing the unique opportunities afforded by a consortium agreement and pursuing NCAA approval to provide these increased opportunities to our students.”

The Presidents of each of the four conferences in which Husson is a member (Eastern Collegiate, Football Conference, Great Northeast Athletic Conference, North Atlantic Conference, and North Eastern Athletic Conference) approved the requested consortium arrangement.

“We are delighted that NESCom students will now be able to participate on our athletic teams,” stated Director of Athletics Bob Reasso.  Our athletic department and NESCom have enjoyed a strong relationship.  NESCom students have broadcast numerous athletic contests, generated video content for our website, and served internships within our athletic department.”  Reasso continued, “We especially want to thank Julie Muller, Commissioner of the NAC, all the presidents and commissioners of our conference affiliations, and the NCAA Division III Administrative Committee for their help in making this opportunity become a reality.”

With the inclusion of NESCom students, Husson’s athletic department continues to expand after adding outdoor track, which will push the number of varsity sports to 15.  That number will increase to 16 in 2012-13 when Husson adds women’s indoor track.

"One of the questions asked of NESCom by prospective students has been whether we offer any college-level sports.  Now, with our Consortium Agreement, we can answer ‘yes’.  This fall, NESCom students will have a chance to play highly competitive intercollegiate sports on Husson University teams.  This will be a good opportunity for our students to add another dimension to their college lives and we appreciate the diligent efforts of Athletic Director Reasso and President Clark in successfully pursuing this arrangement," observed Thomas C. Johnston, President of the New England School of Communications.
